Swan Lake

Glasgow, Scotland
July 2016

Choreographer David Dawson stripped the performance down to the bare essentials, which designer John Otto translated in a shades-of-grey minimalistic and geometric set design.

Otto used nothing but ShowTex fabrics to build up the entire set from top to bottom. Four borders of different heights, made from grey StretchTulle, were mounted at a similar distance from each other to create depth and to elegantly drape the ceiling.

John Otto included mobile elements into his design to adapt the set to the different scenes. The bottom half of the side panels could rotate towards the audience. As for the side panels and ceiling coverage, Otto chose grey StretchTulle again to create a curved border that moved up and down during the play. This elastic mesh stretches easily into any shape, ideal for the many curves in Otto's designs.

As pièce de résistance, ShowTex created a black backdrop in blackout fabric featuring a horizontal crescent-shaped cutout. When lighting the backdrop from behind, a bright white and elegantly curved line appeared, a creative and modern take on the concept of water.
